Smithfield Teachers Receive Armed Intruder Training from Smithfield Officers

SMITHFIELD – Smithfield police were at the high school Monday, directing teachers to climb out windows and shield themselves with desks.

The procedures were part of a new training program to replace traditional lockdown strategies, and equip school staff with options to protect themselves and students in the case of an armed invasion.

After Monday’s session, 150 Smithfield teachers and staff now have the ability to do more than wait and hide for first responders to arrive on the scene.

ALICE, which stands for “Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate,” is a way for individuals “in active, threatening situations to react and/or defend themselves,” said Detective Sgt. Gregg Catlow, who is a certified instructor of ALICE.

Congratulations to Sergeant Cory M. Carpenter and Patrol Officer John H. Beausoleil who received awards during an August 6th ceremony at Bryant University.

Congratulations to Sergeant Cory M. Carpenter (middle). Because of Sergeant Carpenter’s efforts in developing and maintaining the Seatbelt Awareness For Everyone (SAFE) Mini Grant, the Smithfield Police Department received special recognition and was awarded a 2014 RIDOT Highway Safety Champion Award. Also pictured are Chief Richard P. St.Sauveur, Jr. (left) and Colonel Steven G. O’Donnell, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police (right).

Congratulations to Patrol Officer John H. Beausoleil (middle) for receiving a 2014 RIDOT Highway Safety Champion Award. Patrol Officer Beausoleil received this award as a result of his contribution to traffic safety and aggressive enforcement of Speeding Violations, Seatbelt Violations, and DUI Crimes.
