SPAYING & NEUTERING: We have programs available for spaying and neutering pets at a reduced cost.

WILDLIFE: We no longer trap nuisance wildlife (skunks, raccoons, etc.).  All nuisance wildlife complaints must be referred to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management or private pest control companies.

RABIES VACCINATIONS REMINDER: Pet owners are reminded to keep their rabies vaccinations current. Rabies clinics are held annually, many vaccinations may have already expired. Take no chances. Please see your veterinarian to update your pet’s shots.

How can I contact Smithfield Animal Control?
The best way to contact Smithfield Animal Control is to call their main phone number, (401) 233-1055.  If there’s no answer, please leave a message.  If you are reporting an emergency, please contact the Smithfield Police Department at (401) 231-2500 or 911, and the police department will make contact with an Animal Control Officer.

Where is the shelter located?
The Smithfield Animal Shelter is located at 3 Spragueville Road, Smithfield, RI. The Town of Smithfield no longer participates in the Joint Facility Agreement with the Town of Lincoln. 

When are Smithfield Animal Control Officers available?
Smithfield Animal Control Officers are available seven (7) days a week, Sunday-Saturday, 7:00AM to 3:00PM.

What are the procedures for adopting a pet?
An adoption fee is required and you must sign the following documents:

  • Fees: Cats ($150), Male Dogs ($250), Female Dogs ($250).
  • Fill out a Pet Adoption Agreement at the shelter.
  • Rabies vaccination is required within fourteen (14) days;
  • Agree to have the animal spayed or neutered within thirty (30) days. (Per state law).
What if I have a problem with a wild animal?
Animal Control Wardens do not handle nuisance wildlife. If a resident has a complaint about nuisance wildlife, it is recommended that they contact the Rhode Island Division of Environmental Management (DEM) or a private pest control company.

Nuisance Complaint Form (.pdf)
Nuisance complaints can be filled out and submitted IN PERSON ONLY to Animal Control. All nuisance complaints MUST be signed in the presence of one of the Animal Control Officers on duty and ONLY signed by the person presenting such complaint.

Pet Adoption Application (.pdf)
Adoption applications can be filled out and submitted to animal control by mail, email (animalcontrol@smithfieldpd.com) or in person.
