Female Self-Defense Course Starts February 25th

The Smithfield Police Department is now accepting applications for enrollment into the Female Self-Defense Course, which consists of a five (5) week self-defense program geared towards women ages seventeen (17) and up. Participants will meet on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., starting February 25, 2020. The class will meet in the Sgt. Norman G. Vezina Community & Training Room on 2/25, 3/3, 3/10, 3/24 and 3/31.

The course is offered, free of charge, to any Smithfield resident, Smithfield High School student or employee of a business in Smithfield who is at least seventeen (17) years of age. This hands-on course will teach participants how to avoid being targeted and what action to take if selected as a victim. Seating is limited to 20 participants and selection will be on a first-come-first-served basis.

SPD Announces the 2019 Citizens’ Police Academy

CITIZENS’ POLICE ACADEMY 2019

The Smithfield Police Department is now accepting applications for enrollment into the CITIZENS’ POLICE ACADEMY 2019, which consists of an eight week law enforcement program.  Participants will meet on Thursday evenings, 6:00 – 8:30 p.m., in the Sgt. Norman G. Vezina Community and Training room, at the Smithfield Police Department.

The Citizens’ Police Academy will start Thursday, October 3, 2019.  Each week, a different law enforcement topic will be presented, with classroom and hands-on instruction by police officers.  This academy is offered free of charge to Smithfield residents or any person who works at a Smithfield business.  Seating is limited and will be on a first-come, first-served basis.  Applications are available at the Smithfield Police Department or online at our website smithfieldpd.com/community-police/citizens-police-academy/.

Smithfield Police and Smithfield High School continue to support Special Olympics

Today, Chief Richard St.Sauveur stopped by the Smithfield High School to thank School Resource Officer Jon Ricciarelli (middle) and Principal Dan Kelley (left) for their support of the upcoming Special Olympics Torch Run “Super Plunge,” as well as upcoming “unified” events at the Smithfield High School.

SRO Ricciarelli and his dad, Dave, will brave the frigid waters at Salty Brine State Beach on March 23rd & 24th to participate in this year’s 24-hour “Super Plunge,” which is highlighted on SRO Ricciarelli’s shirt. [Super Plungers will plunge once, per hour, for 24-hours!]

TO BENEFIT YOUTH IN RI FOSTER CARE SYSTEM

DO YOU HAVE NEW or GENTLY USED FORMAL OR PROM ATTIRE HANGING IN YOUR CLOSET? (Dresses, Blazers, bow ties, shoes, jewelry)
Ava Sangiovanni, Mount St. Charles Academy student and life-long Smithfield resident, has spearheaded a collection with the help of her school and community to help RI foster youths fulfill their dreams of attending prom.

WHY help:
Did you know most foster children in RI live in group homes and do not have the benefit of attending their prom because of the inability to shop or afford the rising costs of attire and accessories? Your donations to Hope’s Closet can offer that youth hope to attend their prom.

HOW you can help:
Donate new or gently worn tuxedos, ties, gowns and dresses on a hanger or in a bag (including shoes and accessories). All sizes welcome!

Smithfield Police Explorers Participate in Police Explorers Stations Day

On Saturday April 7, 2018, Smithfield Police Explorers participated in Police Explorers Stations Day which was hosted at New England Tech. Stations Day is a competition between police explorer posts in Rhode Island. This year there were 67 police explorers who participated in 8 various stations that tested their skill land knowledge of police work. The photo shows from left to right: Sgt. Cory Carpenter, Alyssa Ambrosino, Cameron Pezzullo, Sebastian DeJesus, Devin O’Brien, and Ptlm. Jon Ricciarelli. Alyssa and Devin walked away with 1st place in the Domestic Violence and DUI investigations and Cameron and Sebastian placed second in DUI investigations. Keep up the good work police explorers!

Kids, Cops and Classrooms Requests Donations of School Supplies

Kids, Cops & Classrooms – Members of law enforcement throughout Rhode Island are being asked to collect new backpacks and school supplies to benefit the hundreds of children who are clients of our Community Outreach partners.

The goal of the program is to help relieve the burden parents experience when they prepare to send their children back to school and to show children that law enforcement officers are their friends and are in the community to help them.

Items can be dropped off in the lobby of the Smithfield Police station until Friday, August 25th, 2017.

Patrolman Jon Ricciarelli Named Police Officer of the Year
