On the morning January 26, 2024 the Smithfield Police Department received a BOLO Broadcast from another Rhode Island law enforcement agency to be on the lookout for a subject involved in a shots fired call in that community. The suspect’s identify and vehicle description were given, and he was reported to be armed and dangerous.
At approximately 10:30 am members of the Smithfield Police located the vehicle parked on Tamarac Drive in Smithfield, occupied by one individual. The subject, identified as Stephan J. Valentino, age 44, was taken into custody without incident. Police located a loaded firearm in the vehicle.
Stephan Valentino was arrested and brought to the Smithfield Police Department. It is expected that he will be arraigned this afternoon in 3rd District Court in Warwick. Smithfield Police are charging Valentino with the following offenses:
Carrying a Pistol without A License 11-47-8
Carrying a Weapon While Intoxicated 11-47-52
Possession of Firearms by Person Convicted of a Crime of Violence 11-47-5
Possession of Large Capacity Feeding Device 11-47-1
Possession of Marijuana over 2 Ounces 21-28-4.01
This incident remains under investigation, and further charges in Smithfield and other communities may be pending. There is no further threat to the community at this time.
