What are the Law Enforcement Explorers?
The Law Enforcement Explorer Post is a program sponsored by Boy Scouts of America for young men and women, ages 14 – 21. Law Enforcement Exploring is a youth development program centered around the five areas of program emphasis: career opportunities, leadership experience, life skills, service learning and character education. The purpose of the Explorer program is to educate and involve youths in police operations and to interest them in a future career in law enforcement.
The Smithfield Explorers meet monthly, are very involved in community service projects, and give back many hours of their time to the town. Explorers are also encouraged to participate in the RI Explorer Academy which is a one-week quasi-military style academy that gives explorers a feel of what recruits experience in the police academy. Smithfield sent five explorers to the 2011 academy held at the Feinstein Youth Camp in Burrillville, RI. The entire academy volunteered to provide traffic control for the annual Smithfield fireworks display held at Bryant University in July.
Who can be an Explorer?
You are eligible to be an Explorer if you are:
• Between the age of 14 and 20 years of age
• No Criminal History
• You are attending school
• If under 18 years age parental approval is required.
What do Explorers do?
Explorers have many opportunities to apply the training they receive. For example, explorers volunteer at community events providing security, traffic control, fingerprinting and assisting with community Crime Prevention Programs.
Explorers also learn firsthand how Police Officers perform their duties. Working closely with the officers, provides explorers with insight into the law enforcement profession.
Explorer Training
