High School Citizens’ Police Academy

What is the High School Citizens’ Police Academy?
The High School Academy is a seven-week program designed to provide participants with an insight into police operations. While attending the academy, participants will be introduced to a wide variety of department functions. The academy is developed to encourage youths to learn more about their police department and an overview of the law enforcement profession.

Recently, Smithfield High School Students were invited to a behind-the-scenes look at the Smithfield Police Department as part of the Department’s first academy for high school students. Eighteen students participated in a 7-week program which introduced them to a variety of the Department’s functions and included classroom instruction, hands-on experience and guest speakers from outside agencies.

Academy Topics

Learn first-hand about the role of police officers and the operations of the department. The academy is presented in seven, two hour sessions. offering some of the following topics:

• Use of Force Tactics
• Traffic Enforcement
• K-9 Patrol
• Hostage Negotiations
• Firearms Simulation
• Criminal Investigation
• Arrest Procedures

Participants also have the opportunity to ride-a-long with an officer. instructors are officers and personnel from the department who are experienced in their fields. The classroom atmosphere is positive and highly interactive. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and discuss topics of interest with instructors.

Who can participate?

To attend the academy, you must be a Smithfield resident currently enrolled and attending a local high school (Public or Private). Students are accepted on a first come first serve basis. Preference is given to Seniors however underclassmen are encouraged to enroll into the academy. There is no cost to register. If you are under 18 years of age parental approvals is required.
